What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for these problems is "malocclusion," which means "bad bite." The practice of orthodontics requires professional skill in the design, application and control of corrective appliances (braces) to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and achieve facial balance.

Orthodontic Options

Mini-Brackets

Modern Mini-Brackets are individually packaged with bonding adhesive "pre-applied" by the manufacturer. Using this technology reduces the time required for the patient to be in the chair during the initial appointment when applicanes are placed.

Quick Curing Light

The "ORTHO Lite" quick curing light is a "plasma arc light" (not a laser) that causes the bracket adhesive to "cure" in 3 seconds (per surface). This technology speeds the bracket placement process (10% of what was required with older systema). Faster curing time translates into more comfort for the patient and more accurate bracket placement for the orthodontist.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are another attractive option to the standard "metal" braces. These braces allow many people to feel better about how they look while wearing them. Ceramic braces are available in a translucent material, to blend with the teeth. The "next-to-invisible" braces were originally developed as an alternative for adult patients who, for career or social reasons, wanted braces that were less noticeable. Now they are popular with orthodontic patients of all ages!
